About Passau

Passau, is a city of 50,000 located in the southeast of Bavaria, close to the border with Austria; lies at the confluence of three rivers – Danube, Ilz and Inn. Important transport arteries are the rivers Danube and Inn, along which you can take sightseeing cruises around Passau and to nearby cities such as Linz, Melk, Vienna, Budapest... In the 1st century BC, the Celtic tribe of the Boi fortified the fortress. Around 80 AD, however, they were driven out by the Romans, who built a border fortress here.

The future of Passau was fundamentally influenced in the 5th century by Saint Severin, who founded a monastery here. In 739, the bishopric was created, which for many years was the largest in the Roman Empire and soon reached the status of a sovereign principality. Its wealth was ensured by its favorable location, as Passau is located at the crossroads of important trade routes and the so-called Golden Path also started from there.

The current form of the city was determined by the building wave after two huge fires in 1662 and 1680, for which Italian masters were called. Thanks to them, you can admire the baroque, rococo and neoclassical facades here.

The Veste Oberhaus, i.e. the Upper Castle of the Prince-Bishops, rising above the city, is one of the oldest buildings in Passau. It was built between the 13th and 16th centuries and today you can see a museum of regional history here, as well as the works of local artists.

The remains of the bishopric can be found, for example, in the so-called New Bishop's Residence, which was built between 1713 and 1730 by Domenico d'Angeli and Antonio Beduzzi, but also in the early baroque monastery complex Wallfahrtskirche Mariahilf from the first half of the 17th century.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, built between 1668 and 1678 on the site of an older Gothic building that burned down at the beginning of the 17th century, ranks among the masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. Only the late Gothic eastern part and the Romanesque crypt have been preserved.

Important secular buildings in the city are represented by the late Gothic Old Town Hall from the 14th to 15th centuries, which was created by joining eight noble houses. Its neo-Gothic tower, 68 meters high, was only added at the end of the 19th century.

About Cesky Krumlov

Český Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. The population of the city is 13 thousand. Its historic centre, centred around the Český Krumlov Castle, has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992

Český Krumlov is bisected by the Vltava River, and dominated by its 13th-century castle. The castle has Gothic, Renaissance and baroque elements, an 11-hectare garden and an original 17th-century baroque theater. There are panoramic views of the old town and the river from the top of its round belltower.

According to local legend, the name derives from Middle High German krumbe ouwe which can be translated as "crooked meadow", after a bend of the Vltava River. It was also mentioned in the 1255 Frauendienst poem by minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein.

Most of the architecture of the old town and castle dates from the 14th through 17th centuries; the town's structures are mostly in Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The core of the old town is within a horseshoe bend of the river, with the old Latrán neighborhood and castle on the other side of the Vltava.

Český Krumlov Castle is unusually large for a town of its size, within the Czech Republic it is second in extent only to the Hradčany castle complex of Prague. It is relatively unique in that it is surrounded by a moat filled not with water, but with bears.
